Merry Christmas

Wishing all our family a Merry Christmas and also wishing we could all be in one place today. Abner was front and center during a portion of the Christmas Eve service at P&V's church - when all the children were brought to the stage. The speaker was using him as a little object lesson with the kids as to how Christ came as a baby. Parker commented that we should maybe lower the bar some with the comparatives.

The temperature has come up some and the snow has been falling from the trees in clumps. Helen and I took a nice long walk yesterday - a really beautiful neighborhood.

A,S&M - we'll do the digital later today. Try not to eat too much - but if you do have someone burp you.

A Blast (Arctic) in Portland

Helen and I are enjoying a beautiful baby boy and an unbelievabe winter storm here in the northwest (mom & dad are pretty cool too) . Abner C is on a pretty good schedule with the eating and sleeping (which means V is busy) and I feel fortunate to have flown in yesterday without a problem. Hundreds are stranded at the Portland airport. They're saying this is the largest winter storm in the area since '68, as far as snowfall. P, V and I played in the snow for a while as Ab and Helen watched from inside. We may venture out tomorrow - but the main activity is indoors with you know who.

YEA BABY, HE'S HERE !

Abner Clealon Campbell is out and about.  God blesses every day but at times he simply blows you away - and a grandson is that kind of thing.  Helen and I are getting by on digital fixes for now but counting the days 'til our trip to Portland for a nice long Christmas babyfest.  This is one beautiful boy don't you think?

Visit with the Elwell's

As you can see we had an exciting day with Kevin & Missy.  The boys are getting soo big, and we had lots of fun playing with them.  Caleb even took a few shots:

We had the pleasure of hearing Kevin preach on Sunday morning, and then spent the afternoon with the family.  We had pizza and then the guys went to the park.  It was a great time.

Baby Shower for Viki

Marissa and Helen hosted a baby shower for Viki with many friends and family coming to Yorba Linda for an afternoon of fun.

Our little Friend

Unfortunately our new dog didn't work out.  We had him checked out by our Vet before we made everything final and he had 2 bad knees.  The vet told us he would need surgery and it cost about $2500.  We felt that because we would not be able to do this, it would be best for him to find a family that would be able to help him this way.  We will keep looking and hopefully find another pet in the future.  We did like him and will miss him, even though we only had him a short time.

New Family member

We have a new addition to our family.  Most of you know that our dog of 14 years died about a year and a half ago.  We have waited for a time before getting a new dog, but recently saw a dog at the Farmers Market and decided to give a new one a try.  So....today we have adopted a dog from a rescue group and his name is Calvin.  This was already his name when we found him and we felt it was fate that he should become our next dog. (Our last dog was Hobbes) He is still a little shy, and we feel he will soon steal everyone's heart.

Recent Trips

K and I both had very fun trips recently.  I went on my Annual Girl Trip with my mom, sister and niece.  It was our 5th trip and we went to Okla. City this time.  We have been to Kansas City, KS, Big Fork, MT, Branson, MO, Newport Coast, CA and now OKC, OK.

K got to go to New York with all the guys.  They got to see the Angels and Yankees play in Yankee stadium before they tear it down and put up a new stadium.  They had great fun, despite the fact that "stubhub" lost their game tickets.  They were guarenteed and so they ended up with even better seats than we had bought.

I'll post some pictures from the game later.

Coming Home

I arrived home on Tuesday afternoon to a whirlwind of excitement and worry. Instead of seeing Ken when I arrived, Marissa had to drop everything and pick me up. Ken had an attack of kidney stones on his way to the airport and had to be put in the hospital. We have managed to go all our married life (32 years) without either of us or any of the boys being in the hospital. Needless to say, we are unaccustomed to the noise and rules of this lifestyle. Ken did not adjust well. BUT, I have him home now, and even thought the thought of a kidney stone is still on the horizon (he hasn't passed it yet), we are trying to get our lives back to normal.

We appreciate all your prayers, now and in the future as we deal with this impending pain that is to come when he finally does decide to let it go...so to speak.

Seismic adjustment

On the phone with east coasters this morning I was reduced to a conversational pattern of - whoa, whoa. Upon inventory this afternoon the house and grounds are fine. Lost a tea pot that Parker brought us from Thailand. The stem and handle broke off and were lying next to each other and somehow the pot portion exited the dining room and rolled down the hall! Otherwise OK.

Hangin' without Helen

Hi readers,
Helen's been gone a week - visiting her mother (with her sister) in Oklahoma. You might think she'd left me with a set of home-centric suggestions for the two weeks she's gone (and there were a few) but I've enjoyed coming up with some of my own ways to stay productive. Some of you may face some down time without your significant bother in the near future so I've started a list of possibilities for you.

We'll call the first group quickies:
1 - Square things up: I like symmetry and nice angles - and there are many, many options to this activity.
2 - Food Inventory: It may not be time to eat but its always good to know that the cranberry mustard is there waiting for the right time. WARNING: This can turn on you, and evolve from a quickie to a ill-fated longer term activity listed later.
3 - Gopher patrol: We live on a hill and like the view but gophers like a hill side too. We've hired professionals but I can walk the backside and grumble (this is more fully enjoyed if the neighbor's cat follows along and I can let him see first hand where he needs to focus).
4 - Laundry sniff: Thanks to Helen, the first week had me well stocked but the dirty laundry is beginning to add up. This activity is simply to determine if said laundry should be moved to the laundry room for staging.

Next we have a more standard set - with possibilities for variation. Dailies:
1 - Watering: I believe my mother commented when visiting that I water more than God. I've tried to take that to heart and being that the west is in a drought I'm doing the little things to help - but you must all realize that the LA basin is a desert and if you want grapes that look like grapes and roses that last in a vase for more that a day you gotta invest. (Plus I'm cutting back on laundry) One systematic change I've made is not walking away from a running hose. My preference is to multitask while gardening but now that I'm standing over the hose I can also catalog the run time by plant type to guard against over watering.
Fruit trees: run time = Until next bathroom run. Ah Hah (you may say) - you're still overwatering. If you consider all the natural elements in play: a man in his fifties with glandular growth and a running hose in his hand as well as a rising heat index, moving later into summer, you must concede.
Roses: run time = 17 lacrosse tosses by the neighbor boy and his friend (25 for the climbers)
Well, there are many more indexes and ratios that have been derived in this activity - but you get the idea.
2 - Food Prep - Helen uses many recipes and variations thereof and I am truly spoiled in this regard. I'm not at a total loss but one must recognize his limitations a make the best of it. A weakness can indeed become a strength. My general approach is one of process management. The fewer processes the better. Helen has an internal clock that allows her to have several dishes in work and bring them all to a glorious crescendo. I mentioned that I prefer to multitask in the yard but have come to see the beauty of the linear in the kitchen. For instance, if grilled shrimp is on tap for dinner the process is: skew shrimp, grill shrimp, baste shrimp, eat shrimp. Do not get talked into sideline activities like shredding cabbage or making a salad of any kind until the shrimp is gone. Do one thing, do it well and move on. This is a recipe for success. (I strayed from it last evening when Stephen and Marissa came over and we waited on some purple peruvian potatoes that were bringing up the rear.)
3 - Laundry: Still conceptual

Finally the creative items,
1 - Fly Boy: I'll admit that this one was accidental on the first go by leaving the screen door off the deck open. But having developed some really nice techniques I let a few friends in and work on the ground strokes. (Helen may ask that this stops)
2 - Commercial guitar: I'm a novice and the options for the beginner are repetitious (necessary) and simple (what else is feasible). But if you a want to get better you have to stretch yourself. If you're patient and know what you're looking for (see simple) you can catch a good riff in TV advertising. I think I caught a Rev. Gary Davis lick in a campaign ad. With the DVR I can repeat these little diddys until I have 'em (or my version). I do need some help here -what would you call a 3 minute string of these?

I was supposed to post a picture of the latest batch of grapes so Helen could get a look - but I let Stephen get away with his camera. Probably the best looking snips we'll get this year, with the heat coming (sorry babe).

Gotta go - much to do,

Ken

Mom leaving town

Okay, today I am going to visit with my parents, and have our "Girl Trip". Ken will be alone for the next 2 weeks, so I expect you to call him occasionally to make sure he's staying busy!

Big News

Well we found out yesterday that the new baby is carrying on the tradition of boys in the Campbell line. We can hardly wait, and the expecting parents are actually accepting our ideas for names! Now most of us wouldn't even consider input like this from anyone, much less the soon-to-be new grandparents. I have already shopped at Babies R Us, and have restrained myself so far, but who knows how long I can last...

Be sure to check out their pictures on their blog (Link on the right side).

K's Birthday present

The kids brought back K's birthday present from all of us. We had P pick it out, and we all chipped in. He has told me several times that he wants to learn the guitar, now here is his chance. He was quite surprised and really loves it.

K's Birthday

Today is K's 52nd birthday.  We celebrated with fish tacos, he fixes them quite well.  He had a very tough day, but we are now going out for pie and coffee. We reflected on all the blessings God has given us that we enjoy.  At least he has a short week and will have Friday off.  I'll post some pictures later.
